In the Fall of 1989, a feral cat nicknamed
Mama Muffy gave birth to a litter of kittens outside the Funny Farm in
Mount Clawmens. With Winter approaching, Shawna took pity on these little
critters and lured them into the house with food. Although Mama Muffy
never adjusted to life indoors, her six kittens were successfully
integrated into the family. The three tuxedo boys were Brave,
Bandit, and
Bad Boy. Their calico sisters were Bits,
Bytes, and Brenna.
All of Steiners' siblings have crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Bytes
developed undiagnosed liver disease, which was exacerbated by thyroid
surgery, and joined Mocha on February 18, 2003. Without warning Bad
Boy experienced heart failure and a clot that paralyzed his back
legs and followed Bytes on October 30, 2003. Brenna
crossed the Rainbow Bridge on January 15, 2004, having developed
undetected tumors in her abdomen and lungs. Bandit
survived a double thyroidectomy in 2001 and removal of a cancerous growth
over one eye in 2005, but succumbed to cancer similar to
Brenna's on November 13, 2006. Brave
survived not only the removal of bladder stones in 2003, squamous cell
carcinoma in his mouth in 2006, and a lump of Grade 2 fibrosarcoma on his
back in 2008; but also radio iodine treatment for hyperthyroidism in 2007,
arthritis in his legs, and the gradual onset of kidney disease. In the
end, he succumbed to an ailment that may have been viral, causing him to
lose his appetite and develop severe congestion. Shawna said goodbye to
him on January
9, 2009. Bits had a "lion cut" in early June
2009, and started sleeping on Shawna's chest again. In the month that
followed she gained a few ounces she had lost since January, and then
gradually stopped eating and became very unsteady on her feet. She crossed
the Rainbow Bridge on July 6, 2009. |

A year after the sextuplets were born, Mama
Muffy had another litter of two kittens. One survived and joined Steiners'
CATS. Pot'o'Fur was only partially
domesticated, but she loved her half-siblings and Patch and mellowed
toward Jim and Shawna. When lying on Shawna's bed she allowed some petting and scratching
and purred loudly. In late 2007, our Furry Girl started joining Shawna in
bed at bedtime and again in the morning. After dental surgery in early
February 2008, she moved her base of operations to the living room, where
she spent all her time until she crossed the Rainbow Bridge on April 1,
2008, of a fast-spreading cancer. |
